Wandering Tales

Across Goyder, stories are waiting. Wandering Tales will bring them to life through eight storytelling nights over the next year, and we’re looking for five communities ready to host one. If your town has a story to tell, we want to hear from you.

Wandering Tales comes to Goyder. Do you want a tale in your town?

Congratulations to Mid North Arts for securing an FRRR Small & Vital grant for Wandering Tales, a series of eight local storytelling events to happen throughout Goyder over the next 12 months. Each event will align with an existing local event, significant date or cultural moment and be hosted in partnership with a local venue or community group.

Storytelling nights are beautifully simple but powerful events. They bring people together to listen, connect and share while celebrating the richness of local lives and places. They are flexible, low-cost and highly community driven and we are looking for community ideas as to where to do them and what the themes should be!

For each Wandering Tales night:

  • Three local storytellers will be commissioned and paid to prepare a short story connected to the theme of the night.
  • On the weekend of the event, a professional storytelling facilitator will run a workshop for the commissioned storytellers and anyone keen to polish their story beforehand. These workshops will help shape and strengthen their stories and public speaking skills.
  • The facilitator will then host the evening event, which will be divided into the commissioned stories and ‘Your Turn’ open mic section for spontaneous storytelling, songs or reading prepared works on the theme.

Here is the catch: we’ve only locked in three of the eight events! For the remaining five Wandering Tales, we are looking for venues and community collaborators to make them happen.

Does Terowie have a story to tell? Julia? Eudunda? What does Farrell Flat want to say? Do you have a pub, a community hall, garden or significant site of natural beauty that you want to activate?

Or is there a cause you think needs to be celebrated and marked? Do you want to share war stories for ANZAC Day? Should we mark the International Day for People with Disabilities? Do you want to tell stories of art’s impact during SALA or historic stories for History Month? Does the Eudunda Show & Shine need to be paired with stories from the road? What about Valentines Day? The Burra Yacht Race? Wear It Purple Day?

Reach out and tell us about your idea, committee or venue or just to ask for more information. Let’s fill the calendar and the region with stories!
