Looking ahead, the Mayor concluded, "The journey ahead is bright, and together, the Regional Council of Goyder and the Ngadjuri Nation Aboriginal Corporation will make great strides. This week we did not just sign a document, but we are forged a path to a shared future."

On the 8th of April 2024, the Regional Council of Goyder hosted a landmark gathering with the Ngadjuri Nations Aboriginal Corporation Board in Burra, taking a significant step towards cultural collaboration. Set against the historic backdrop of Kooringa (Burra Creek), a site of deep cultural importance, the event aimed to draft a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between the two organisations, marking the beginning of a new chapter in communication and inclusiveness.

The day was rich in symbolic moments, beginning with a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country from Burra Community School prefects, a welcome from Ngadjuri Chairperson Carlo Sansbury, and a powerful smoking ceremony led by Council’s Arts and Cultural facilitator and Yankunytjatjara artist Ali Eckermann. These gestures honoured the deep connection between the Ngadjuri people and the land.

The MOU was developed with the aim to build a strong and transparent pathway of communication and inclusiveness between the Council and Ngadjuri, working in partnership to develop informed decisions and reconciled values whilst respecting the cultural heritage and the rights of the Ngadjuri people.

During the gathering, discussions also focused on Ngadjuri Nation’s support for Burra’s bid for UNESCO World Heritage status, reinforcing the shared commitment to cultural and historical preservation.

Following these discussions, the MOU was officially signed at the Council office on 18th June 2024 solidifying this partnership and paving the way for future collaboration.

On the day Mayor Gebhardt expressed profound pride and a deep sense of responsibility, stating, "The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding between the Regional Council of Goyder and the Ngadjuri Nation Aboriginal Corporation is more than a formal agreement; it is a testament to our commitment to reconciliation, respect, and mutual cooperation."

“The MoU represents the strong relationship that has been built between the Council and Ngadjuri Board Directors over the past few years which is built on mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to a better future. It is a living document, meant to evolve as our relationship grows and as we learn from one another”.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, the Mayor added, "I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members of the Ngadjuri Nation Board for their openness, wisdom, and collaboration. Your input has been invaluable, and your trust is deeply appreciated."

This momentous event not only strengthened ties between the Ngadjuri and the Council but has also positioned the partnership as a driving force in preserving Burra’s cultural heritage and community spirit for generations to come.
